Access to water/quality, crop irrigation and renewable energy are important interrelated issues. The interconnection of food, energy and water systems – commonly referred to as the FEW link – requires the integrated study of these systems to improve the resilience of these natural resources and adapt to our changing world. In this article, we examine the state of FEW-Nexus research in Guatemala to highlight progress while highlighting future research needs. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify peer-reviewed articles and grey literature published on the topic from January 2000 to May 2020. The articles were reviewed and classified to identify the location of the Guatemalan study, type, subject and data sources. Only a limited number of studies have examined the networking of FEW systems; 26% of articles (36 out of 138) focused on two aspects of the FEW link, while 20% (27 out of 138) focused on all three aspects. Water issues were studied most frequently, and the management of drinking water, hydropower and wastewater were frequently discussed. We also identified a low rate of primary data generation, with only 42% of papers (58 out of 138) generating new data, and a stronger focus on nexus search in grey literature.
Guatemala`s FEW connections are mainly structured around three distinct but related areas: drinking water and sanitation, climate change and renewable energy, and urbanization and modernization. Expanding initiatives in these three areas at the same time would provide a better understanding of the interconnected role of food, energy and water in improving the resilience of natural resources and reducing multidimensional poverty in Guatemala. Since our company was founded in 2014, our program has grown exponentially, but our organization`s original vision has remained the same: to free itself from immigrants exposed to the anomalies of the current system. Libre of Nexus began as a service to inmates. Our founder and CEO, Mike Donovan, created his vision for our company when he was also a victim of the unfair bail process and has personally experienced the financial burden that bonds cause. Under his leadership, Libre by Nexus has worked to ensure that our program focuses on the principle of respecting and affirming the intrinsic worth and dignity of each person. Many of our employees have navigated the broken immigration system and understand first-hand how turbulent the immigration process can be. Our company has grown from its original location in Virginia to more than twenty offices across the country, allowing us to better serve those seeking a new life in the United States.
