But wait, there`s more. The rules state that you must not modify your LAMS bike in a way that changes the power-to-weight ratio from factory specifications. This means, sorry, no, you cannot ride a bike that the dealer has equipped with a fresh replacement exhaust, even if it is the authorized dealer. Aftermarket exhaust systems are believed to reduce weight and increase performance. Well, we all know that`s not always true, but try to prove it to the policeman who just pulled you over on the side of the road! The power-to-weight ratio of a motorcycle is the ratio between the maximum net power of the engine and the weight of the motorcycle. This ratio determines acceleration – the higher the gear, the faster the bike can accelerate. Okay, a few weeks ago we played how to get your motorcycle license, pee slightly, no drama there. Lately, I`ve heard a few people ask “What is a LAMS bike?” and “Is it still approved with a replacement exhaust that the dealer has put in place” and “What can I do to upgrade my LAMS bike for me?” So I thought I`d take the time to point out some fact and fiction and hopefully answer some of those questions along the way. If you get your full driver`s license and remove the restrictor (yay!), you will also need to recertify it as a full license bike. This means taking it to your local inspector, filling out paperwork, and having it changed in the government system. So legally, it`s no longer a LAMS bike.
As a cyclist, you are responsible for making sure you are on the right bike for your licensing requirements. No matter what you`re riding – from scooters to superbikes – good equipment is too big an investment to ignore. This could mean the difference between a bad fall and injuries that prevent you from driving again. First of all, a LAMS motorcycle or “Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme” is a motorcycle with a displacement between 251 cc and 660 cc and a power of less than 150 kilowatts per ton (measured by the engine). Basically, there is a list on the government website that shows model by model which motorcycles are “allowed” in this area for riders with their learners and limited motorcycle licenses. There is also a list of motorcycles under 251cc that are banned and make too much power. All other motorcycles under 251cc can be driven by learners and restricted license holders, including scooters. Easy, right? However, you can install different branded tires, better composite brake pads, or just about anything that doesn`t change the bike`s power-to-weight ratio. Personally, if you want to make your bike different from any other on the road, do it. Small things like spare handles and some stickers will not bother the gendarmerie.
The rules even say that you can exchange the suspension for a “Direct Fit” replacement if you wish! However, use common sense, handlebar mirrors and shorty levers are indeed lighter than factory equipment and obvious to any official spectator. You must request a compliance assessment of the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) for the motorcycle. This assessment may take up to 15 business days. To apply, please upload and submit a Motorcycle Vehicle Specification Form (E106). There are also other technical details to consider. Installing an upper box makes the bike heavier, which violates the rules. The power-to-weight ratio cannot be increased OR decreased. It sounds a bit strange, but that`s the way it is. If your bike has a built-in “restrictor” that limits power, which can be removed when you get your full driver`s license, it should stay in place until then. If you have an accident and your insurance company determines that you have removed the limiter, they don`t have to pay! Remember, the rules for your safety are there to help you get your full license. These modifications are intended to allow the owner of the motorcycle to customize his motorcycle without raising its power above the maximum for a LAM homologated motorcycle and without changing the classification of the motorcycle (lifting above 250cc). The LAMS rating system is an initiative of the Safer Journeys road safety strategy.
Learn more about motorcycle licensing rules and engine size. During the period of your provisional driving licence, you must affix visible P-plates to the front and rear of your vehicle or motorcycle at all times. If you want to pass a practical assessment for an unrestricted Class R driver`s license, you will need to use a motorcycle that exceeds the LAMS specifications. The scheme does not apply to existing holders of a moped driving licence or category R driving licence. The following other minor changes are also allowed, as long as they don`t increase performance or reduce weight: Hopefully this helps answer some of the questions I`ve heard recently, let me know if you have more in the comments below! If you already have a driver`s license to drive, you can skip this step and skip straight to the fifth step. The performance and weight of the bike is based on manufacturer data to comply with Australian design rules. Motorcycles may not be modified or restricted to be classified as authorized motorcycles. Motorcycles manufactured before 1960 and not exceeding 660 ml are included in the diagram, but do not appear in the table below. The Learner Approved Motorcycle (LAM) program allows beginners to ride only motorcycles or scooters with low and moderate riding.
LAMS identifies a range of motorcycles suitable for learners and Class 6 restricted driving licence holders based on their level of experience. The scheme determines the appropriate motorcycles based on the overall performance of the motorcycle.
