Since 2020, DLA Piper has been working closely with the organization to provide legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence who seek injunctions (DRVO) but do not have access to a lawyer. As part of LACLJ`s innovative model, lawyers trained without lawyers meet with survivors in emergency shelters, police stations and other locations where social services are available, and use tailored software to help survivors prepare the court documents needed to apply for an ORD. These advocates then turn to DLA Piper volunteers, who provide daily year-round coverage for several months and offer immediate legal review of DVRO cases. This allows litigants to file stronger DVRO applications, increasing the likelihood that they will receive the protection they need. While many survivors are in Los Angeles, the technological and remote model allows the project to reach residents of rural and underserved counties in the state.
