But new, larger classes of partners do not always lead to the expansion of partnerships. Companies often reconstruct fluctuations. The Power 100 combines objective data points (changes in the number of employees over time, “homemade” partners and number of female partners) with subjective feedback from more than 20,000 employees, partners and other members of the legal community. The result is a more complete picture of each company that includes employee satisfaction, compensation, reputation, desirability as an employer, and data-driven measures of business growth. The Power 100 is designed to offer a new perspective on some of the most prestigious and wealthy companies by using a new rubric to show how they compare to the competition. The perfect “ATL score” is 100. Each company receives a maximum number of points based on the weight of each metric (maximum 25 points for the highest compensation rating, 5 points for the largest number of growing employees, etc.). Points are awarded on a sliding scale from highest to lowest. (For some categories, companies were divided into levels and points were awarded accordingly.) These points are in addition to the total ATL score displayed in the leaderboard.

In July, we launched the ATL Law Firm Reputation Survey, which asks those of you who work at Biglaw to evaluate your peers and competitors. For our purposes, we divide “reputation” into two distinct aspects: 1) the purported strength and quality of a company`s practice, and 2) the perceived desirability of the company as a potential employer. (For some, these factors will be functionally equivalent. For others, these are less overlapping considerations.) In addition, respondents to the ATL Law Firm Reputation Survey were asked to rate companies in their specific market based on the quality of the practice and attractiveness as potential employers. (When creating the survey, we limited our selection of city-specific firms to offices with at least 50 lawyers.) Five Atlanta-based companies are on the Am Law 100 list: King & Spalding (No. 22), Alston & Bird (No. 52), Troutman Sanders (No. 68), Ogletree Deakins (No. 73), and Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton (No. 78). Thirty-one of the 100 AmLaw companies have offices in Atlanta.

The new normal means new challenges for businesses. Is bigger always better? More sales seem nice unless the company is too dependent on a few rainmakers who can jump ship and let the rest of the business look for customers. The last customer who took care of the status of a white shoe is surely somewhere trying to find a new ribbon for his typewriter. Obviously, we make value judgments when selecting and weighting these measures. For example, we reward companies that maintain low debt or offer a relatively better chance for new employees to eventually partner. Of course, law firms are not homogeneous in their approaches to partnership pathways or compensation structures or other aspects that we have tried to measure here, but we have done our best to take these differences into account and create a formula that allows for meaningful comparisons.
