Hawaii has the only valid reason to make hedgehogs illegal: the fear of raising escaped hedgehogs (Hawaii has a good hedgehog climate). There are consequences if it is determined that you are illegally owning a hedgehog, and they are adapted to the legislation or regulations that surround the requirements for owning a hedgehog, if allowed. In some states, hedgehogs are confiscated or removed from the house. Some fear that hedgehogs will be euthanized if they were possessed illegally, but these claims are not confirmed. The laws surrounding hedgehogs are usually related to the nature of the species, its threat to other animals, and the conservation of the species and other animals around it. Now that hedgehogs have been added to the list of animals without restriction, property licenses are no longer necessary. In New York, the special local legislation that regulates the illegality of hedgehogs is Section 161.01(b)(23) of the New York City Public Health Code, Title IV Part B. Apparently, as in other states where hedgehogs are illegal, there is a subliminal fear that they pose a health security risk.
