The Bureau of Vital Statistics collects and provides a means to establish the legal identity, age, ancestry, and nationality of every person born in Kentucky. It also provides a legal document on the date, place, and cause of each death in the state, and provides a central repository for records of certain other vital events. The Office of Vital Statistics (OVS) collects, preserves and protects records of all births, deaths, marriages, divorces and stillbirths, and issues certified true copies. The Vital Statistics Office has no records of births or deaths prior to 1911, except for late records of births of persons born before 1911 and attested by affidavits and written evidence. The Department of Civil Registers and Health Statistics registers, maintains and issues certified copies of civil status records. These include birth, death, fetal death, marriage, and divorce certificates for all events that occur in Michigan, with records dating back to 1867. Key statistics are compiled from these event registries and the Michigan Central Cancer Registry and Congenital Anomalies Registry to support public health, policy, and biomedical research. The Kentucky Vital Statistics Act, passed by the General Assembly in 1910, provided for and legalized the registration of births and deaths. Central registration of marriages and divorces began in June 1958 in Kentucky. The Vital Statistics Office has no register of marriages or divorces prior to June 1958. For information on marriage certificates prior to June 1958, please contact the clerk of the county where the marriage certificate was issued.
